Alum (Aluminum Sulfate) is a flocculating agent used in swimming pool water treatment to clarify cloudy water by causing suspended particles to clump together and settle to the bottom for vacuum removal. This chemical is particularly effective for treating pools with persistent cloudiness that cannot be cleared by filtration alone. Alum works by neutralizing the electrical charges on suspended particles, allowing them to combine into larger clusters that either settle or are captured by the filter.

Alum treatment is a valuable tool for addressing severe water cloudiness problems, especially after algae treatments, heavy bather loads, or storm events that introduce fine particles to the pool. The process requires careful following of application procedures, including proper pH adjustment before treatment, precise dosing, adequate circulation, followed by a period of no circulation to allow settling. The settled floc is then vacuumed to waste, not through the filter system.
Use alum for severe cloudiness that won't clear with normal filtration, after algae treatments, or when water has fine suspended particles. Regular clarifiers work for mild cloudiness; alum is for more serious cases.
1) Balance pH to 7.2-7.5. 2) Dissolve required amount in bucket of water. 3) Add to pool with pump running. 4) Run pump for 2 hours. 5) Turn off pump for 8-12 hours to allow settling. 6) Vacuum settled floc to WASTE (not filter).
Typically 1-2 kg per 10,000 liters for moderate cloudiness, up to 4 kg per 10,000 liters for severe cloudiness. Start with lower dose and increase if needed.
Yes, but with caution in vinyl liner pools as settled alum can stain if not promptly removed. Vacuum thoroughly within 24 hours of treatment.
Wear gloves and eye protection. Avoid inhalation of dust (granular form). Store away from moisture as it absorbs water. Keep away from other chemicals.
