- Copper Sulphate
Copper Sulphate (Copper Sulfate) is an algaecide and water treatment chemical used in swimming pools to control and prevent algae growth, particularly stubborn types like black algae and mustard algae that are resistant to conventional chlorine treatments. This chemical works by disrupting algae cellular processes and preventing photosynthesis. It is particularly effective as a preventive treatment in pools prone to recurrent algae problems.
Our swimming pool grade Copper Sulphate is carefully formulated to provide effective algae control while minimizing potential side effects such as staining or copper accumulation in the water. It is typically used as a supplemental treatment alongside regular chlorine sanitation. Proper dosing is critical, as excessive copper levels can cause greenish water tint, staining of pool surfaces, and blond hair discoloration.
Copper Sulphate is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive algae prevention program rather than as a primary treatment for active outbreaks. It is particularly valuable in outdoor pools with consistent algae problems, pools with inadequate circulation or dead spots, and facilities that experience frequent algae challenges despite normal chlorine maintenance. Regular monitoring of copper levels is essential when using this product to prevent accumulation and potential problems.
For prevention: 1-2 grams per 10,000 liters weekly. For treatment: 5-10 grams per 10,000 liters. NEVER exceed recommended doses as copper accumulates and can cause staining.
It can stain if copper levels exceed 0.3 ppm or if pH is above 7.6. Always maintain proper pH (7.2-7.6) and test copper levels monthly. Use sequestering agents to prevent staining.
Pre-dissolve in warm water (it dissolves slowly), then add to pool with pump running. Brush pool surfaces after application. Best applied in evening when chlorine demand is lower.
Not recommended for plaster pools with light colors or natural stone finishes as they're more prone to staining. Also avoid in pools with metal components that could corrode.
Use a copper test kit or take water sample to pool store. Maintain 0.2-0.3 ppm for algae prevention. If levels exceed 0.3 ppm, use metal sequestrant and partially drain/refill pool.
