- Hydrochloric Acid
Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid) is used in swimming pool maintenance for pH reduction and total alkalinity adjustment. This strong acid effectively lowers pH levels that have become too high due to chlorine addition, evaporation, or other water chemistry factors. Proper pH control is essential for swimmer comfort, chlorine effectiveness, and prevention of scale formation or equipment corrosion.
Our Hydrochloric Acid for pool use is specifically formulated and diluted for safe handling and effective water chemistry adjustment. It is available in various concentrations suitable for different pool sizes and treatment requirements. When used correctly, it quickly corrects high pH conditions and helps maintain the ideal pH range of 7.2-7.8 for optimal chlorine effectiveness and swimmer comfort.
Regular pH monitoring and adjustment are critical components of proper pool maintenance. Hydrochloric acid is the most common and effective chemical for lowering pH in swimming pools. It should always be added to water (never water to acid) and introduced slowly to the pool with adequate circulation. Proper personal protective equipment including gloves and eye protection should always be used when handling this chemical.
For 31% hydrochloric acid: 100ml per 10,000 liters (2,640 gallons) lowers pH by approximately 0.2. Always add small amounts, circulate for 4 hours, then retest before adding more.
Always wear chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and protective clothing. Work in a well-ventilated area and have neutralizing agent (baking soda) nearby in case of spills.
Dilute acid in a bucket of pool water (always add acid to water, never water to acid). Pour diluted mixture slowly into deep end with pump running. Avoid pouring near skimmers or returns.
If improperly applied (undiluted or in one spot), it can etch plaster or damage vinyl liners. Always dilute and distribute evenly with pump running. Never pour directly onto pool surfaces.
Store in original container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from other chemicals (especially chlorine). Keep tightly sealed and away from metal surfaces which can corrode.
